Handling cross-currency affiliate payments
Track commission, funding and receipt currencies, and explain conversion timing and charges before affiliate payouts.
Define the commission currency first. Record how that obligation becomes the amount the advertiser funds and the amount the publisher receives. An exchange difference should be explainable without changing the original commission record.
Map the payment path
Field / Question to answer
- Sale currency
- What currency was the customer order reported in?
- Commission currency
- In which currency is the publisher’s entitlement defined?
- Funding currency
- In which currency does the advertiser settle the obligation?
- Receipt currency
- What currency reaches the publisher’s payment account or bank?
- Conversion and charges
- Who applies the rate, when, and who bears each charge?
Currencies can differ. If the contract defines commission in USD, an A$ management estimate should not replace the USD obligation. An A$ commission likewise does not promise an overseas publisher the same number in its local currency.
Identify each conversion point
Ask whether conversion occurs when an action is recorded, when funds are deposited, or when the publisher withdraws. Check the actual provider and payment route. impact.com says that, for its documented conversion flow, the converted amount is calculated on the action date and remains fixed. That rule should not be applied to another network or an unverified account arrangement.
Awin lists AUD among its supported currencies and describes Payoneer processing for international publisher payments, with receipt choices depending on region. That does not establish a particular publisher’s available route, rate or charge. Confirm those details before promising a net amount or arrival date.

- RBA published rates
- Indicate market value but may differ from actual dealer rates
- impact.com conversion timing
- Amount calculated on action date and fixed thereafter
- Awin AUD support
- AUD is supported via Payoneer, but receipt options vary by region
Keep a conversion bridge
For each obligation, retain the original amount and currency, converted amount, applied rate and date, explicit charges, party bearing each charge, and settlement reference. Keep reversals tied to the original transaction and conversion so a correction can be explained. If an invoice, platform balance and bank debit show different currencies, reconcile them as separate stages instead of forcing their numbers to match.
Do not substitute an indicative Reserve Bank of Australia rate for the rate actually applied to a payment. The RBA says its published rates indicate market value and may differ from dealer rates. An investigation needs the provider or bank’s transaction record.
Separate payment conversion from tax records
Finance may need an Australian-dollar accounting or GST figure even when a partner payment is denominated in another currency. That record serves a different purpose from the amount transferred. Have finance assess the applicable conversion and tax treatment for the actual supply and counterparty; currency alone does not decide it.
Before a cross-border partnership starts, state the commission currency, known conversion point, responsibility for charges and intended payment route. Where a provider cannot confirm a publisher’s route or net receipt, leave those outcomes unpromised until they are resolved.
