Programme Setup

Part of Choosing affiliate software or a network

Comparing a private programme with an affiliate network

Compare a private affiliate programme and a network by recruitment, administration, costs, control and exit options.

A private affiliate programme puts publisher sourcing and relationship management with your team; a network can add publisher discovery and shared workflow tools. Compare who does the work, how publishers are found, the costs you can verify and what records remain accessible if you leave. Examples here are Awin, impact.com and Tapfiliate; the private route is an operating model, not a named software product.

Start with the partner relationship

List the publishers you want to reach. If you already know suitable trade, content or community partners, ask how they prefer to apply, report results and resolve payment questions. If you depend on finding new publishers, inspect the proposed network's actual search and invitation route.

Awin lets advertisers search by partner name, Publisher ID, website URL and promotional type, then filter results by status and promotional type. Its search also handles typos, partial names and synonyms. impact.com offers a Partner Marketplace and direct sign-up links; Tapfiliate has a beta marketplace alongside advertiser-led recruitment.

On impact.com, marketplace partners can be invited or apply independently, and brands can mark prospects or propose terms. Marketplace partners need Marketplace access and may work with multiple brands; a direct sign-up link does not require Marketplace access and can offer an exclusive relationship, except where the partner already has an impact.com account.

Each route can reveal candidates; none guarantees that a publisher will accept or actively promote your offer.

Tapfiliate describes its Affiliate Marketplace as a beta available to all Tapfiliate users. Its stated free-of-charge term applies to Marketplace participation.

With a private programme, your team finds and approaches publishers; Awin search and the impact.com Marketplace add discovery tools. Tapfiliate's Marketplace can add visibility and connections, but its advertisers still make programme decisions.

Private Programme vs Affiliate Network: Key Differences

  • Publisher DiscoveryPrivate: Team-led sourcing. Network: Awin search, impact.com Marketplace, Tapfiliate beta Marketplace.
  • Recruitment ResponsibilityPrivate: Your team sends invitations. Network: Platform tools assist, but advertiser makes decisions.
  • Partner Access ModelPrivate: Direct relationship. Network: Marketplace access required for some partners; direct links allow exclusivity.
  • Marketplace Participation Cost (Tapfiliate)Free of charge for Tapfiliate users.

Recruitment
Who builds the prospect list and sends invitations?
Admission
Who checks publisher fit and programme terms?
Commission review
Who checks orders, refunds and agreed rules?
Partner service
Who explains missing sales, changes and payment timing?

On a private route, your team owns publisher sourcing and partner decisions; a network can add discovery tools and organise workflow, but the advertiser still makes programme decisions. Tapfiliate says advertisers manage approvals, commission validation and payout terms, while its Marketplace facilitates the connection.

Awin provides pending commission review and approval or decline actions. Tapfiliate documents commission review, approval and rejection. Check the workflow available in the proposed account.

Awin's commission page shows pending and validated commissions and supports bulk validation and data export. Tapfiliate's Commissions report lets advertisers approve or reject commissions individually or in bulk, add internal comments and export commissions as a CSV file.

Commission Validation Workflow Comparison

  1. Awin Commission ReviewPending review with bulk validation and data export options.
  2. Tapfiliate Commissions ReportApprove/reject individually or in bulk, add internal comments, export as CSV.

Compare costs and control

Request written terms covering setup, recurring and transaction charges, support, contract length, integration work and exit. Include your staff time: a private programme puts publisher sourcing with your team, while a network may provide discovery tools but does not remove advertiser decisions.

Tapfiliate states that Marketplace participation is free of charge for Tapfiliate users. That applies to Marketplace participation, not necessarily the cost of running the programme or using other network services, so confirm those costs separately.

If you use an agency to manage either route, its fee may be a fixed monthly retainer, a percentage of affiliate spend or programme revenue, performance or CPA-based, or a hybrid. Affiliate commissions are a separate cost layer.

A private route still needs a software choice. Compare the software vendor's licence terms directly; Tapfiliate's free Marketplace participation does not establish the price of a private-programme tool.

Ask who controls publisher terms, rule changes and data access. Before signing, establish which partner and transaction records you can export, the date range, how open commissions are handled and what access continues after termination. Keep your own authorised record of publisher contacts and agreed terms.

Awin's commission review view includes commission ID, order reference, order date, partner, coupon code if used, order value and commission amount; the view can be customised with additional information. Tapfiliate allows commission exports as CSV, but the fields are not specified in its report description.

Choose a private route when your team can source and administer partners and the software handles your rules. Choose a network when its usable publisher access and workflow justify its terms.

Neither route is automatically more reversible: compare contract length, termination terms, record exports and post-termination access before committing. If you run both, agree which system credits each order before enabling overlapping tracking.
