Publisher Recruitment

Finding publishers whose readers match the product

Assess whether a publisher’s readers, location and proposed placement fit your product before making contact.

Find publishers by the questions their readers bring. A relevant publisher reaches people who could use the product, in places the business serves, through a placement that explains why it fits. Traffic size alone cannot establish that match.

Describe the customer need

Write a short brief: the problem the product solves, who can buy it, Australian delivery or service coverage, and important exclusions. If the product has several uses, choose the one this partnership would address. A label such as “lifestyle audience” gives little basis for a shortlist.

Turn the brief into questions: Does the publisher address the same problem? Are its examples useful to the customers you serve? Could a reader reach an eligible product page from the proposed placement? Record what remains uncertain.

Inspect the proposed property

Read relevant pages, watch sample videos or request a newsletter issue. Notice the questions answered, products already covered and the point in the buying decision. A comparison may suit someone weighing specifications; a tutorial may suit someone solving a practical problem. Choose according to the decision your product helps with.

Check the particular site or channel that would carry the offer. One publisher may operate several properties with different readers; ask where the referral would appear. Awin advises advertisers to inspect websites, social channels, newsletters and media packs when assessing a partner. A platform profile helps with discovery, but cannot establish the fit of an unseen placement.

Ask what audience figures mean

For any audience figure, ask for the property, reporting period, location and measure. “Australian audience” could mean followers, registered users or recent visitors. Mark an undated or undefined figure as unverified.

Ask for a realistic placement idea rather than a sales promise. A useful proposal names the reader question, format and product information needed. Compare it with the publisher’s existing work. If the audience looks relevant but the first idea is weak, discuss another format.

A shortlist note can record reader need; property and example; evidence of Australian reach; proposed placement; concern; next question.

Audience metrics: what to verify for Australian publishers

Audience type
Followers, registered users, or recent visitors
Geographic location
Australia (verified by platform or third-party data)
Measurement method
Audience estimate or analytics-based (e.g., Google Analytics, Awin tracking)
Undated or undefined figures
Marked as unverified

Decide whether to approach

Invite when you can name a credible reader need and a plausible placement. Ask for clarification when the property is promising but its audience or method is unclear. Pass when customers cannot obtain the product or the placement would require unsupported claims.

This decision establishes relevance for outreach. It does not forecast sales or replace the later application and terms review.
