Coupon and cashback affiliates
Coupon and cashback affiliates can influence a shopper near checkout, but a credited sale is not automatically a new sale.
Coupon and cashback affiliates can influence a shopper near checkout, but a credited sale is not automatically a new sale. Judge each partner by the additional customers or orders it plausibly brings, the discount and commission cost, and what the shopper expected from the offer.
Separate three cases: a public promotion already available to everyone, an exclusive partner offer, and a cashback reward funded through the partner arrangement. Record eligibility, duration, product exclusions, code ownership and the commission rule.
Shopify allows discount eligibility and limits to be configured; impact.com shows promo-code credit depends on programme settings. An attributed order count from either system alone does not establish incrementality.
Explain the cashback journey
Cashback partners commonly describe a shopper journey that begins with a click-through to the retailer. TopCashback Australia says the retailer pays it commission for sending the shopper, and it shares that commission with the shopper as cashback. Explaining this sequence helps affiliates set realistic expectations about when a reward is confirmed.
Make the tracking step clear to shoppers. ShopBack describes searching for a store or game, then shopping, booking or playing as usual, with the transaction tracked. It also promotes a browser extension to help track cashback.
A concise partner listing can explain what action starts tracking and where the shopper can check progress.
Set expectations about confirmation and withdrawal separately. TopCashback says cashback should appear on a member’s Earnings page within seven days of purchase, but it is not usually ready to withdraw immediately. The retailer must first confirm it after the returns period, and TopCashback must receive the related commission before making the amount payable.
TopCashback lists bank-account transfer and PayPal as withdrawal methods, with no minimum payout amount and requests available at any time. Cashback affiliates can use these details to make reward terms clearer, while keeping the retailer’s offer conditions distinct from the cashback provider’s payment process.

Manage partner operations
Coupon and cashback affiliates can operate through different kinds of publisher businesses. Commission Factory describes affiliate marketing as performance-based partnerships between advertisers and affiliate partners, and invites affiliates to monetise content or a platform through brand partnerships. Agree on the promotional material and tracking method that fit the partner’s channel before a campaign begins.
Keep campaign records consistent across the advertiser, affiliate and platform. Record the partner or media source assigned to each tracking code, applicable item or category exceptions, and the campaign’s active status. This makes it easier to investigate a conversion that is invalid or credited differently from the programme’s expected rules.
Review partner activity using reports suited to the questions being asked. Commission Factory describes its platform as providing data-driven recommendations and market comparisons, with benchmarking reports and metrics. Those tools can identify areas for review, but an affiliate programme should still check the underlying transaction and tracking setup when a result looks unexpected.
Assess the partner's contribution
Look at whether shoppers had visited before, whether the partner introduced the product or appeared only after a cart was ready, and how many orders used a code posted elsewhere. Compare margin after discount, commission, returns and later customer value. If scale permits, use a carefully designed holdout or a staged partner change; otherwise label the conclusion as directional.
Give exclusive codes a clear distribution plan. Monitor where they appear and decide what happens if one leaks. A code may still apply at checkout even when partner credit is withheld, so marketing attribution and discount eligibility need separate controls. Do not punish a partner based only on a leaked-code count until the origin and contract terms are checked.
For cashback, account for the reward cost, affiliate commission, network fee and any merchant discount. Compare that total with a direct offer to a comparable audience, not a headline percentage. The right partner may be valuable because it reaches a distinct audience or helps a considered purchase; the wrong one may add cost to orders the store was already likely to win.
Configure promo-code tracking
Treat a tracking promo code as an attribution rule, not just a text string. In impact.com, each code can be assigned to one partner or media source; purchases driven by another partner using that code are recorded as invalid conversions. Confirm the intended partner assignment before publishing the code and check that the programme’s tracking settings are enabled.
impact.com distinguishes Coupon Ads from Tracking Promo Codes. A Coupon Ad supplies promotional content and a link, then uses the programme’s click-credit rules, which may require the partner to be the last click. A Tracking Promo Code can credit or remove credit from a partner according to the code’s setup and the shopper’s click path.
Check the code’s match type before creating a batch. Exact-match promo codes are not case-sensitive in impact.com, while regex promo codes are case-sensitive; a regular expression can group codes with a shared prefix. For example, the pattern shown in impact.com’s help material matches codes beginning with SUMMER.
Use Promo Code Exception Lists when different codes, product categories or SKUs need different partner rates, including a rate of zero. This lets programme managers apply specific payment rules to actions associated with selected codes or items. Record the intended rate alongside the code setup so reporting can be checked against the agreed arrangement.
An expired partner contract does not automatically expire its assigned promo code in impact.com. The code remains assigned to that partner, and later sales attributed to it and the partner appear in the Invalid Conversions Report. Include code status in contract close-out checks rather than assuming that ending a contract disables the code.
