Publisher affiliate programmes versus referral schemes

Compare publisher affiliate programmes with customer referral schemes by participant, reward, rules and operating work.

Use a publisher affiliate programme when you want partners with their own audiences to promote an offer under agreed commercial terms. A customer referral scheme typically encourages customers to invite people they know in return for a defined benefit. Both may use links or codes. The useful distinction is who shares the offer, why they share it, and what the business must administer.

These are working commercial models, not exclusive legal categories. A customer may also be a publisher, and a publisher may use a code. A business can run both if it sets clear rules for each.

Match the model to the job

A publisher relationship may help when customers need explanation, comparisons or repeated exposure to a specialist audience. Ask what the partner publishes, whom it reaches and what information it needs to make accurate claims. Registration in a network does not establish that a publisher is active or suitable.

A customer referral scheme may fit when customers already recommend a straightforward offer to people they know. Define who may advocate, who qualifies as a referred friend, when a benefit is earned, and what happens after cancellation or refund. A referral link records a route to an offer; it does not establish that the friend is new to the business.

Set rules before choosing software

For a publisher programme, specify the commissionable event, eligible products, referral window, permitted promotion, competing-claim rule, review period and payment route. For a customer scheme, specify participant eligibility and whether the advocate, friend or both receive a benefit. Check the proposed software against the actual triggers and exceptions: feature availability can vary by provider and plan.

If both models run, decide how an order with both a publisher click and a customer referral code is handled. The business may allow one reward, both or neither under its stated terms. Check that the configuration follows that decision before launch.

Make public promotion clear

When a participant creates public promotional content in return for a benefit, consider whether the audience can recognise the relationship. The ACCC has raised concerns about paid or gifted influencer posts that appear to be independent endorsements. Assess the actual communication: a private invitation and a public review do not have the same format or audience.
