Checking click IDs through a checkout journey

Trace a test affiliate click from landing page to order record and locate where referral data stops matching.

To check whether a click ID is associated with a checkout conversion, follow one controlled referral from the link to a store order and its affiliate transaction. The ID does not have to remain in the address bar on every page. Check how the chosen integration records and carries referral information.

Map the expected route

List the publisher link, tracking redirect, landing page, basket, checkout, payment step and confirmation. Mark domain changes, hosted checkout and returns from a payment provider.

Record where this integration receives a click ID or other referral identifier, how it retains the necessary state, and which event reports the purchase. Parameter names and matching methods differ.

For example, an impact.com gateway tracking template can populate {clickid} with a unique click ID. Its test-action screen includes an Order ID. Use these as inspection points for that setup; they do not mean a raw click ID must pass through every checkout page.

Trace one order

  1. Use the account’s supported test link or method and a distinct order reference. Record the link, intended publisher, click time, browser and landing destination.
  2. Check whether the landing page receives the referral information expected for that integration. Where a redirect is involved, inspect its destination.
  3. Follow the ordinary basket, checkout and payment route. At each handoff, check the intended transfer or retention of tracking state. An absent URL parameter alone is inconclusive.
  4. Record the completed store order’s reference, time, currency and eligible items.
  5. Find the affiliate action or transaction and compare its order reference, credited publisher, available referral identifier, event time, value and status.

For Awin Classic, use the test publisher link, complete a test purchase, then look up the order reference in Tracking Diagnosis. For impact.com, run a test action using test template terms with a 0% default payout, so the conversion is handled as a test.

Find the first divergence

If the expected referral information is absent at landing, inspect the link and redirect. If landing is correct but no conversion appears, inspect the checkout integration and purchase event.

If a conversion appears under another publisher, check the recorded interactions and credit rule before diagnosing lost state. If the value differs, compare the conversion payload with the store’s eligible items and discounts.

Repeat the trace for routes that materially differ, such as a return visit or hosted checkout. Repeat it for a browser implicated in a real discrepancy.

Client-side conversion tracking can lose events when a confirmation page loads slowly or a blocker interferes; this is a possible cause, not a diagnosis of an individual order. Record the first divergence and the order that demonstrates it. Commission approval follows the separate order-validation process.
